Research into film audiences

All media is made with an audience in mind and in film this is one of the most vital things to think about as if there is no audience to watch the film then there is no point making it because the producers are not going to make any money or get their message across from it. All potential audiences are categorised by a method known as demographics where the producers want to know the age, status, gender, race and location of their potential audience. Producers may do audience research to find out their chosen target audience's preferences in a number of different ways such as questionnaires, focus groups and comparing their product to existing ones of a similar context. Now the producers may begin to shape their product to appeal to there chosen audience by  fitting in with their current known viewing habits.
