The importance of sounds

Sound is probably the most vital feature in any movie as it is used to set the mood of the film and to create suspense where necessary. Sound is used to create suspense, it might be edited so that it builds up until at the highest point of the action that will also be the climax of the music. There are a number of types of sound that can be used in a film such as:

Foley sounds
Diegetic sounds
Non-Diegetic sounds
Soundtrack
Environmental noises

All of these types of sound are used in films and we are going to make sure that we use some of these in our film opening too. We will use foley sounds in order to create the gasp as the woman is killed and for the vibrating of the phone as it rings. Environmental noises of a domestic environment will be heard as some of the footage may take place inside the house, and also the sounds of outside in the garden. We may also have to create the sounds of footsteps using foley sounds and as we have learnt when re-editing Arlington road, it is very important to be careful that the footage synchronises with the sound.
